Half the repair calls here are not a broken gutter. They are a gutter that was never big enough.
A large share of Dothan's housing went up between the fifties and the seventies, and that generation of building has a signature: a wide, low-pitch roof spread over a single storey. It is a good roof. What it does is deliver a very large catchment area into a very ordinary gutter.
The standard fitted then, and still fitted now by most installers, is 5-inch K-style with a 2x3 downspout. On a compact two-storey house that is ample. On a sprawling low-pitch ranch during a Wiregrass thunderstorm putting down an inch in twenty minutes, it is simply undersized, and no amount of repair changes that.
The call almost always comes in as "the gutter is leaking" or "it must be blocked". Then we run a hose test and the water goes straight through, clean, and still comes over the front edge in a real storm. Nothing is broken. The system is at capacity.
At that point the honest options are a larger downspout, a second downspout on the long run, or 6-inch trough on the worst elevation - and none of those is a repair. We say which one it is, and we would rather lose a repair invoice than take money for resealing a joint that was never the problem.
Where there is genuine damage, it is usually downstream of the same cause: a section that has carried standing water for years, sagged under the weight, and pulled its fasteners.
Reseal a seam or end cap, $75-$150. Reattach or extend a downspout, $85-$175. Re-hang a sagging run, $150-$350 depending on length and what the fascia is like behind it.
Adding capacity is quoted separately, because it is a different job with a different outcome. Dothan is our home route, so most repairs are scheduled the same week.
Almost certainly capacity, not blockage. A wide low-pitch ranch roof puts more water into the trough than a 5-inch profile with one 2x3 downspout can carry during a Wiregrass downpour. The fix is another downspout or a larger one, not a repair.
Sometimes, and it is the first thing we look at - a second outlet on a long run is cheap and often solves it entirely. Repitching helps at the margin. Replacing the whole profile is the last resort and we will say when it is genuinely warranted.
Small repairs like a reseal or a reattached downspout run $75-$175. Re-hanging a sagging section runs $150-$350. We inspect and quote a firm number before starting.
